Can yoga help me sleep better?
Yoga may help improve sleep quality for some people, and its traditional practices are well suited to creating a transition from activity into rest. The most useful evening yoga is usually not about achieving difficult postures. It is about gradually reducing stimulation.
A quiet sequence can release some of the physical restlessness carried from the day. Slow, comfortable breathing gives attention a rhythm to settle into. Practices such as Yoga Nidra or simple meditation can help the practitioner move from constant doing toward conscious rest. Research has found improvements in sleep quality in several groups, although yoga should not be presented as a guaranteed treatment for chronic insomnia.
The yogic lesson is valuable even beyond sleep: rest is also a practice. We can learn to stop feeding the momentum of the day and create conditions in which the body and mind are allowed to become quiet.
