Can yoga replace therapy or treatment for anxiety?

Yoga can be a meaningful part of caring for anxiety, but it should not be presented as a replacement for appropriate psychological or medical treatment when that treatment is needed. Research suggests yoga can reduce anxiety symptoms for some people, while established therapies remain important for anxiety disorders.

What yoga offers is distinctive. Asana can help us reconnect with a body that anxiety has made feel unsafe or restless. Pranayama gives us a conscious relationship with breathing. Meditation develops the ability to observe thoughts and sensations without immediately treating them as commands or facts. The yogic tradition also asks deeper questions about identification, attachment and the nature of the mind.

These practices can sit beautifully alongside professional care. Yoga does not become less valuable because it is not asked to replace everything else; it becomes more responsible and more useful.
